Defined: Burn Injury

Burns are injuries that can be caused by fire, radiation, chemicals, heat, electricity, or friction. Around the world, burns annually cause the death of about three hundred thousand people and they cause countless more non-lethal burn injury cases. Four thousand of those are Americans who die due to burns with about two thousand of those being kids under fifteen.

Burn injuries are rated by how much damage has been caused to the skin, how deep the burn is, and how much damage was also caused to the surrounding area including the underlying tissues. The exposed areas of our body are the most typical ones to be burned. This includes feet burn injuries, hand burn injuries, face burn injuries, neck burn injuries and arm burn injuries.

Burn Injury: Causes

The following is a list of possible causes for burns. First, second or third degree burns can be the result of each of these types of causes.

  • Chemical burns (eg: strong acids like sulfuric acid)
  • Scalding (eg: from spilled hot coffee, steam or boiling water)
  • Fire (eg: touching the fireplace or campfire)
  • Radiation burns (eg: from sunburns or radiation therapy)
  • Heat burns (eg: hot metals or the stove)
  • Electrical burns (eg: electric shocks)
  • Construction Site Accidents;
  • Work injuries;
  • Building Fire;
  • Tanning salon overuse or negligence;
  • Car, SUV and Truck accidents;
  • On The Job Accidents;
  • Motorcycle accidents;
  • Defective Products; and
  • Welding burn injuries.

Total Body Surface Area Burned

Since all human bodies are very different in terms of their sizes, shapes, and weights, professionals have devised a quick calculation system to describe how much area of the body the burn injury has affected. This is mostly only used for burn injuries that are 2nd or 3rd degree. It has been named the Rule of 9s and it efficiently conveys the total body surface area (TBSA) that has been burned on a victim. They have broken up the adult human body into eleven separate sections. Each section is estimated to be about 9% of the total body surface area. The remaining 1% refers to burn injuries to the genitals. The eleven sections refer to: left arm and hand burn injuries, right arm and hand burn injuries, abdomen burn injuries, head burn injuries, chest and neck burn injuries, upper back burn injuries, lower back burn injuries, right thigh burn injuries, left thigh burn injuries, left lower leg, calf and foot burn injuries and right lower leg, calf and foot burn injuries.

First Degree Burn Injuries

Most people think of first degree burns as only burns that are worse than the average sunburn but they can be much more than that and much more painful. First degree burn injuries affect only the top layer of the skin. The usual signs are a white plaque, redness, some swelling, and pain. It may take about six to seven days for the burn injury to heal.

Second Degree Burn Injuries

Second degree burns are injuries where the burn has hurt more than just the outermost layer of skin. They may even go down as deep as the reticular dermis layer. The signs for second degree burns are redness, blistering, and mild to severe pain. The healing times are on average about three weeks but it can vary greatly.

Third Degree Burn Injuries

Third degree burn injuries are when the burn fully injures every layer of skin and even causes problems to the tissues beneath the skin. Because these burn injuries damage the nerves, they may not cause any pain at first. The victim will still be in pain, though, as most third degree burns have first or second degree burns around them and those still are painful. The signs that it is a third degree burn are that the burned area of the body looks charred, brown, white, or leathery.

A Clearer Classification System

The almost universal method of rating a burn injury has been using the above system of degrees that you were probably aware of where burns are rated as either first, second and third degree. Recently, a new system which is clearer for medical professionals is gaining ground around the globe. It is well liked because the type of burn is right in the name so this leaves less room for being subjective. In this system, first degree burns are named Superficial Thickness because they only involve the outer layer of skin. Second degree burns are called Partial Thickness – Superficial because these are burn injuries that affect the skin including and between the lowest layer of skin and the top layer.

In this system, third degree burns are called Partial Thickness – Deep. This new system also creates a fourth degree burn which it refers to as Full Thickness. Regardless of which method you want to use, burn injuries can be very life changing and painful and they deserve top-notch representation by one of the seasoned San Bernardino burn injury attorneys at DiMarco | Araujo | Montevideo.

Critical Burn Injury Areas

Although each and every burn needs to be taken seriously, some burns are classified as critical just because of their location (as long as they are 2nd or 3rd degree). These four general areas are a person’s genitals or face or full hand burn injuries or full foot burn injuries.

Burn Injury Treatment

Regardless of whether you or your loved one has a toe burn, hand burn, arm burn, leg burn, head burn or a burn anywhere else, you must be sure to contact your doctor or paramedic immediately. Treatments do differ quite a bit depending on how serious the burn is, its location on the victim’s body, their overall condition (eg: dehydration) and what other injuries were sustained (eg: broken bones). It is an important general rule for you to not break any blisters.

For really serious burn injuries, treatments could include the removal of dead skin (debridement), cosmetic surgery, skin grafting, or other types of surgeries for burn injuries. Massage, acupuncture, and physical therapy are some of the supporting treatments that are now done to help with the overall recovery process.
